One number worth designing around: 600 square feet. Under Springfield's adopted code, a free-standing light-frame accessory structure of 600 sq ft or less with an eave height of 10 feet or less requires no frost protection — a real simplification of the foundation work. The rules that shape a garage build
- Placement and setbacks: Springfield wants accessory buildings at least 10 feet off the rear lot line; Republic requires rear-yard placement outright and caps total accessory footprint at 7% of the lot. Check your city's page before siting.
