Missouri jurisdictions commonly treat true agricultural structures differently from residential accessory buildings — Greene County's own code guidance addresses agriculture structures as their own category. What qualifies, and what review it gets, depends on your parcel's zoning, its size, and the building's actual use. Ask directly: "Does this qualify as an agricultural structure, and what does that change about the permit?"
Two honesty notes on that conversation. First, "agricultural" describes the use, not the building style — a pole barn used as a shop or storing personal vehicles is an accessory building no matter what it looks like. Sizing: the curve works for you
Ag buildings are where the larger-is-cheaper-per-foot curve pays best. The mobilization and post-setting costs that dominate a small build spread thin across a big one — a 40×60 shell at $35,000–$55,000 costs meaningfully less per square foot than a 30×40, and 40×80 or 60×100 footprints continue the curve. The practical sizing questions are equipment-driven: door heights for the tallest machine (combines and loaded hay trailers set the bar), clear-span width for turning equipment inside, and eave height for stacking. Build the size the operation needs in five years, not the one it needs today — the marginal square footage is the cheapest you'll ever buy.
Design details that matter on the farm
- Post embedment: the county's 12-inch minimum hole diameter and below-frost embedment (24 inches in this area) are the structural system — on open ground with real wind exposure, embedment and uplift ties are the whole ballgame.
- Ventilation: hay storage wants ridge and eave airflow — moisture trapped under a steel roof is how hay heats. Open-sided hay barns and enclosed equipment bays ventilate differently; decide use before design.

- Driveway access: in unincorporated Greene County, a new field entrance needs a driveway permit through the Highway Department; access onto a state highway routes through MoDOT. Cheap to ask first, expensive to fix after.
Livestock and future flexibility
